Fruity

I probably shouldn't be listening in to people's conversations but sometimes they are so funny.

Like yesterday while browsing in a store, I heard this customer and one of the staff chatting about their dislike of fruit. Apparently both of them have a hard time adding fruit to their diet. Which fruit? Any fruit apparently.

They both preferred fruit juice to fruit.
So instead of extolling the benefits of fruit they were just going on about apples and mangoes like they were some sort of unnatural alien concoctions.   Or like medicine that they had to force themselves to ingest at some point during the day cause I got the impression that on some level they still knew that fruit were good for you.

The conversation which I was listening to while trying not to turn around laughing was pretty funny What got me though was when one made the comment: "Yea I just cant get into fruit. Something about the juiciness just weirds me out."

Mail

I dont know if this has ever happened to any of you before but its happened to me twice so thought I'd share.

Today I had to mail off a small package. Had been to the post office on Friday to pick up the nice little padded envelope they sell there and came back today with everything packed and ready to go.

So I hand de package to the post office clerk, Of course she weigh um and ask what in it. I tell she. Why it is the next step she gine do is to measure the package with a tape measure too. I mean is not like I bring in me own cardboard box, I using an envelope that they the post office themselves sell me, that is a standard size. Why she had to remeasure it? That aint mek no sense to me. Dem think I tamper wid de envelope and unmek it and stitch it back bigger than the standard size?

Chupse!

huh what?

Two of the stranger stories this week.

1) Woman's hair weave stops bullet. Am I the only one that finds this story unbeweavable? On another note in these tight fiscal times Police departments should be looking in the feasibility of replacing Kevlar with weave.

2) Chinese mistress contest turns tragic. Seriously first a mistress contest? Well I guess that's not so far fetched with all the slackness on "reality" shows but what does his wife have to say about this one wonders. Then dude obviously broke the cardinal rule of reality TV. Anytime you get rid of a contestant get them the hell away from the rest of contestants and yourself. Like he don't watch TV or something. No he let the woman drive he and 4 other contestants off a cliff. How you going to have the mistress that got eliminated driving the car with all the other contestants in it? Moron!

Faces

Two weeks ago I had a bunch of posts planned. Had some great ideas, nice introspective, artsy-ish, reflective stuff. Then life happened and Toronto had that explosion and the Olympics started and Bolt and the Jamaicans won and my wife turned all Janet Pym on me and set her trained squad of killer wasps on me (Wu-Tang had killer bees she has wasps go figure) and well lets just say I got sidetracked and never got a chance to post on them.

Now I cant even remember what I was going to talk about. Actually I still remember one but not the angle I was going to approach it on two weeks ago so let me make up something.

Faces. They define us on a casual level don't they? Like for instance living in this multicultural society that is Toronto I've learned to at least partially figure out race and nationality from faces well not only faces but clothes and speech and mannerisms and attitudes and other stuff too (its called stereotyping) but lets just deal with faces.

Have you ever noticed that similar faces can span races? Like I ran into a black acquaintance the other day and realized that her face was very similar to that of a Chinese friend of mines' in terms of the shape and the cheekbones and stuff like that. I also had a situation where I met this Indian guy who's since become a friend and couldn't believe how much he looked like one of my black friends back home. Uncanny resemblance. Kinda weird when you think about it actually.

And think about how we work on face recognition. I'm always seeing people and thinking hey he or she looks like so an so. Its an ever evolving process too because if this person somehow becomes your acquaintance later on or you see them enough times you start to realize the dissimilarities between them and the person you on first casual glance thought they resembled. Then they themselves are entered into your face database and suddenly you are comparing other folk to them.

Then there is the whole faces with regards to location situation. This time I wont go into my some folks don't recognize me outside of the office spiel or my but the guy was 5 inches shorter, at least two dress shirt sizes wider and wearing a tux while I had on a suit spiel either but sometimes I see someone I've had some minor interaction outside of the regular place I'm accustomed to seeing them at and then I try to figure out where they are from.

Its like detective work. OK like seeing the restaurant server walking his dog or the hardware girl buying groceries out of uniform. You're like I know her but from where? I know she works in a retail capacity now is she from Wendy's or is that the girl from the book place? your mind churns and then click oh its the girl from Tim Hortons. Right!

Wrong! Oh its that lady who works in the office down the road that I see at the station every week. Happens all the time.

Whats interesting about that is if I went back into the same store or the same location I normally see the person at I'd have no problem recognizing them because in your mind there is that association between place and face. Its part of your built in face recognition protocol I think. But when you see them out of uniform or on the bus or playing with their kids in the park suddenly it becomes a detective puzzle to your brain. Takes a while to figure out sometimes too.

That's all I got to say for now.

Stranger than Fiction

Two strange stories caught my attention on Monday. Not sure if you heard about them but I thought if you didn't then I'd share.

The first one related to the death of a female athlete due to an overdose of anti-inflammatory cream. In other words the young lady died from using too much Bengay.

Dr. Ronald Grelsamer of Mount Sinai Medical Center said Newman had a very abnormal amount of methyl salicylate in her body.

"She either lathered herself with it, or used way too much, or she used a normal amount and an abnormal percentage was absorbed into her body," he said.

Its a sad story but at the same time I just find myself asking the question how much Bengay does one need to rub down with in order to O.D on that stuff. I mean she must have been bathing or swimming in that chemical or something. They said she was using like three different products with the chemical in it. I'm thinking ya know if you need to use that much of the stuff on your aching muscles then its probably safer to just stop doing whatever is making them ache so much until your body can heal on its own.

The second story relates to two officials in China who got jailed after they allowed a blind contractor to construct a bridge which eventually fell down.

Huh! Blind contractor? OK now my first thought was if ya was a crooked politician trying to siphon off some funds for your pocket you could at least come up with something better than a blind contractor as an excuse for why the bridge fall down. I mean if ya need some help I'm sure one of those crooked poli-trick-sions we got in the Caribbean could give ya a tip or two.

Then the next question was the obvious. But wait how he could be building a bridge if he blind? I mean even if the man did name Matt Murdock or he was having Inner Visions like Stevie this still wouldn't make any sense.

I mean I know they say if you lose one sense the others become sharper but still! I mean if every blind man could build a bridge then that would got to be real easy to do.

Plus this situation just gives rise to so many questions? Does he check all the work by touch? Did he just become recently blind? If so did he do this work before the incident of blindness set in? How easy is it to slack off if he's your boss on the construction site? Was he born blind and just using his imagination to construct the bridge like "in my mind this is what I think a bridge should look like and he really constructing a tunnel or something so and no one ain't feel to tell him different."

Seriously have you ever heard anything as crazy as this?
