Faux Pas?

Disclaimer: I aint claiming to have nuh fashion sense ya hear and disclaimer two I aint got nuh problem wid people an hair cause I got hair too but if ya did see wha I see at lunchtime today ya wud be saying de same ting I sayin now.

Walking down the road at lunch I see this young girl pushing a bicycle on the sidewalk. From the time I look pun she I say something wrong but is only on second glance that I realize wha the issue was. See the woman was wearing a t-shirt and a pair a dem three quarter pants dat de women duz wear I think wunnah duz call dem capris or something so.

Anyways see my girl, her arms and legs expose and her arms smooth smooth and hairless and the woman legs hairy hairy looking like she in need of an afro comb or like she is part hobbit.

Now like I say the issue din that she hairy, if she hairy she hairy I aint got nuh problem wid dat more power to she fa not conforming to the norms an ting so. No the issue was that she legs hairy and she wearing elf boots mekkin um worse and then in complete contrast to that she arms bare bare bare like the neck on a bare neck chicken, not a hair at all at all. Um was like somebody glue one body torso pun a different body else legs. Now I aint no fashionista but dat look like a fashion faux pas to me.

Fashion faux pas

Wha she did wearing atall doah?

The food was nice, real good actually but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the waitress' getup. In fact I spent the entire meal trying to figure out how to comprehend and adequately convey the outfit in question in text and I still dont think I've found the words.

It was like fan girl meets burlesque meets street walker meets I duz juss wear this at home. But that doesnt get to the heart of the outfit. The word Obzocky comes to mind and if ya want an official explanation of that word let me self reference to this post cause even wikipedia a quote de I (puffs out chest to look important, realizes that chest still not bigger than belly, silently gives up).

She was wearing pum pum shorts, long black see through stockings or leggings under the shorts and a pink top with black polka dots which was long enough to half cover the shorts at the back and was tied around her neck. The top had seen better days judging by the dullness of the colors. It was then all covered with a black sweater which came to just below her waist allowing the pink polka dot top to be revealed at the bottom as well as at the section tied around her neck. The entire ensemble was completed by a thick black ribbon tied at an angle on her head.

See even that doesn't truly convey the sight. I still think I'm missing something here. Hmm maybe I'll just stick to obzocky.

Lovely lovely food though.

Style a style

I aint complaining, believe me I aint. But there is just one thing about when the hot weather hit Toronto that bugs me.................... these Toronto people duz completly forget hot to dress properly.

I guess that is what duz happen when it is winter 8 months of the year and people duz get excited once they feel a lil warmth on their skin but still some of these people duz really get carried away by the warm weather.

For instance today I out enjoying the sunshine and the heat on mi skin but everytime I look around I seeing fashion faux pas like dem going out of style. Like the old white fella at the subway station wearing shorts and got dem half pull down like the young fellas duz wear except he aint wearing no underwear and all we seeing is hairy butt crack staring at everybody. Lawd ave merci!

Or the young sista wearing the backless outfit with her breasts push up but still all her bra straps and the back of the bra showing out. I mean I not sure if there is actually any time when it is fashinonable to be showing off your bra but clearly this outfit was not it especialy since the bra din matching the top at all at all.

And the always present spandex wearers. Tell me why you would wear white spandex pants and not wear proper undergarments under it. I mean wunnah trying to give me nightmares or just scare me from leaving my house this summer. Cuhdear!

And no I aint complaining about showing skin. I accept that some will always show more than they should but what I got issues with is the lack of fashion, the styles that aint no style at all

Hence I will proposing spring refresher fashion classes to help people recover fashion sense in the wake of a brutal winter. Mek them mandatory too.

Bubby-dus

(first in the written in Barbados trilogy)

And wunnah tell me Barbados doan got mountains. Chupse!

Looka I not suh sure what happened in Barbados the past few years cause I haven't been living there now for the last decade but I mean I noticed it this summer when I was there and just didn’t have the inclination to write about it then but well lets just say that something has changed with the women and the women’s fashions.

As I described it to a friend, its like there was an explosion of breasteses in the past few years as almost every woman young, old and in between is wearing some extreme-cleavage revealing or enhancing garb where the motto must be the more skin the better. Its was like being in a Russ Meyers movie at some points.

Where were these fashion options when I was a teenager, young single and carefree nuh? chupse!

I mean as I noted while walking the beach one morning it really is a thing when most of the women on the beach are dressed a lot more conservatively than the majority of women in Bridgetown during the day.

And as someone else noted to me when I told them about this well maybe they should consider changing the name of Bridgetown to Breast-town cause that was all that was on display from swan street to Broad street, high street, Marhill street and fairchile street and everywhere in between.

Now before ona dese young yams like Kami call me an old fogie and say I don’t know fashion its not that I complaining about the tit-illation (pun intended) I am just making a comment that modesty seems to have indeed left the building cause I know for a fact that that much skin wasn't on display when I was younger and could appreciate it lil more.

See I would have done a proper detailed scientific study and all that but its difficult to keep abreast (pun intended) of the comings and goings with so many subjects to choose from. All I know is that everywhere I went all I could do was look and try not to look like I looking but well the trying not to look was difficult cause like I said everybody and their mudda and I mean that literally was wearing some sort of revealing top so it was breasts staring at ya left, right and centre.

Now once upon a time it was bajan men that used to wear their shirts halfway unbuttoned and show off all their scraggly unkempt chest hair and such. Now the men learn to button up the button ups or dem wearing t-shirts and the women like they decide to flip tings and learn to unbutton or well just wear things that keep their chests looking like they want to bust (pun intended) loose.

And it wasn’t just one cut of dress either that I referring to. It was like almost every woman in Barbados just trying to accentuate that part of the anatomy and some women were so sizable they really needed to do the opposite of accentuate instead a mekkin we focus in on the top heaviness.

So there were the low cut tops, the v-cut tops where the v’s were real low, the absence of bras or the other issue where the ladies were clearly not wearing the correct bra size to go with their endowments. At first I played that one off as well maybe they don’t know nuh better or there is a lack of good bra sizers in Barbados but then I was informed that oh no they do know but they find wearing a bra clearly two or more sizes too small is a way to get that extra push up an push out look ie: that stand at attention look where it seems as if the breasts saluting ya and are trying to reach the chin or are coming together and collaborating on how best to make a break for it and jump out of the low cut blouse at any moment.

And as I pointed out before it wasn’t just one type of woman wearing these outfits. Big girls with plenty assets spewing over tight, tight tops or printed out in skin fitting blouses like if they flex like the hulk the whole thing pop loose and a fella lose an eye and small girls with not much to work with squeeze up and push out or wearing v cut things with no bras . Big hardback old women that really ya wud think should know and dress better and young young girls that ya figure their parents shud know better than to dress them like that. Somehow every and any women managed to get in on the action. It was quite a sight.

Not that I complaining! I just making a social commentary. This is what I saw and this is what I reporting so don't start off with no Jdid is a pervert thoughts. Wha I would gotta be Stevie Wonder not to have notice how these women dressing.

Still it gave me a thought. I feel the Tourism Authority should use this to their advantage and instead a promoting Barbados as land of flying fish and sun and sea we could do a thing with Bubby-dus land of the exploding breasts.

Well um is juss an idea cause the economy ain't dat good these days and sex duz sell.

Too much too much

Saw a woman this week who literally turned heads. And not only those of men but those of women as well. The reason? Gravity defying breasts, the size and shape of actual bowling balls. Clearly cubic zirconia or rather fakes. I mean it was so bad that one lady walking along the street, staring back to take in the spectacle almost walked right into yours truly.

Now I'm sure the holder of the boulders thought she was the ish. I mean what with all that head turning and almost causing accidents an all but it should be noted that there is a fine line between spectacular and spectacle and sorry but the blow up doll look is not hot.

On another note, Fall fashion is always so interesting and diverse. Some people just cant come to terms with the change in weather and cling to their summer garb. That and the fact that we all feel cold differently (especially since many of Toronto's inhabitants originated in some very diverse locals) lead to sights like two individuals walking down the street with one in a t shirt and the other with a leather jacket and scarf or one in shorts and the other bundled up in a leggings and a pea coat. Would almost lead you to believe that we all have individual portable weather devices that we can control our personal environments with.

Then there was the lady I saw outside smoking yesterday. Wrapped up tight tight with a scarf around her neck yet wearing the flimsiest of camisoles (thank you for that word Miss Smith) with all her arms, shoulders and chest all exposed. Go figure.

Play ya position

Now I'll start with the disclaimer that I'm not the most adventurous cat out there. Wouldn't exactly say I'm conservative but I do know what fits me and what doesn't fit me. That doesn't mean I play into the stereotype where folks dictate what I can and cannot do, it just means I know what I'm comfortable with and what I'm not comfortable with.

I live by the edict that whats good for the goose sometimes just isn't good for the gander and the old bajan saying "follow pattern kill cadogan" read you don't have to do what everybody else is doing. This goes for if not all well certainly many aspects of life ...... including fashion.

Now I have, and I'm certain so have you, seen many larger women and wished that they would follow my edicts instead of trying to slip into clothing that clearly was made for women who don't have their girth. The innocent bystander drawn to these sometimes horrible spectacles usually watches or cringes while wondering why the person in question decided to leave their home in the outfit in question.

The answer is never simple. Some folks just don't know how to dress properly and some are looking for attention seem to be the common camps into which the answers fall.

That has become common place but what is also becoming more common place is older folks who try to dress up like in bajan parlance "young yams". Lawd ave mercy!

Now I'm not hating. I'm not saying dress like an old fogey. I'm just saying when you reach a certain age every new style is not for you. That don't mean start dressing like your grandmother or grandfather, that just means use common sense while picking an outfit.

I mean, I'm in my 30s and I'm graying, I cant go out there in an oversized t-shirt longer than some women's skirts looking like Solja Boy or one of these new age rappers. I also probably couldn't get away with wearing my hair in corn row, even if I found that style even mildly attractive, so I stick to the styles that I'm comfortable with, that fit me, (although truth be told I haven't grown that far out of my college mode of dress much to my wife's chagrin) that look decent on me without looking like I'm trying too hard to be cool. That doesn't mean I wont incorporate something new every now and then but it just has to fit with the overall me. It cant overwhelm the image.

Well I really wish other folks would do the same. One of the current styles with the women these days is those lacy tops. Now to be honest when this style first came out a few years ago I thought that a large number of women had lost their mind and were forgetting to put on the rest of their clothes cause I remember these lacy tops from when I was growing up and my mother used to call them half slips or something so and wear them under dresses and blouses and the like. They also resemble lingerie so I almost went up to a woman one time and say "girl you like you run out the man house suh quick ya faget ya blouse".

Alas that was not the case. It was/is a genuine style. I still think its better suited for the bedroom mind you but I accept that its the in thing with the young girls and its considered cute and hey if they want to tantalize me and give me a glance at their assets in their lingerie tops who am I to complain. Not me!

Actually lol, my only real complaint and it really isn't a complaint more a suggestion so the women wont embarrass themselves is if you going to wear these flimsy things on the road wear the right undergarments. Hey the fellas ain't going complain but at the same time some of you ain't looking exactly decent with some of the things ya wearing but then again if ya comfortable so be it.

But like I said when you reach a certain age that style isn't for you. Today in the mall I saw a lady in her 50s in one of these lingerie tops. Now the young girls can get away with it and look cute in some cases but when ya reach a certain age and certain things don't sit like they used to when you was in ya teens and 20s you duz juss look lawless or half senile when you walking bout wearing one of those flimsy things with bra straps flying all over the place like ya rush out the house half dress and forget to put on a blouse over that top.

That is all I got to say.

I cram to understand

The weather made a sudden change this past Tuesday. It wasn't unexpected though cause we've been fortunate to have had summer like temperatures all the way down to mid-October. Global Warming I guess. Thanksgiving Day (three Monday's ago) it was actually above 30 degrees Celcius, one of the warmest if not the warmest temperatures ever associated with that time of year.

So we been basking in sunshine and nice weather until last Tuesday when all a sudden the rain start pouring and the temperature drop by a good 15-20 degrees.

I always say this place don't have no proper temperature transition at all. One day ya in a t-shirt the next day you in a sweater and long johns bundle up shivering. That is why people duz get sick and by people I including myself as I hayso struggling with a cold again. Cuhdear!

Anyway one of the things that duz intrigue me about this time of year is how people dress. It cold but not yet winter and sometimes there is a tendency for it to be windy. Some people though seem not to want to give up on summer so even though it raining they walking around in their open toe shoes or short skirts. I cant understand that at all. And even worse is when you see someone in a short skirt or short pants and then they got on a thick thick jacket and sweater. So what they trying to tell we is their legs dont get cold or what? I cant understand that one.

Yesterday I see a fella dressed appropriately; long pants, shirt, leather jacket. Only thing was my man although wearing the jacket had the shirt unbutton down to his navel (like some of them old fellas back home in the Caribbean) showing off his hard bony chest. And when I say hard and bony I mean de man chest did look juss like a jucking board den. And it was cold and windy where I saw him too. Just cant understand the logic.

Maybe he was trying to impress somebody.

less intelligent

I was all set to post about this whole Glamour magazine issue with the assistant editor (now former) who dissed Afros and dreadlocks. In short though nothing here is surprising. Folks always have issues with black hair. Accept it. I do wonder how they were able to hide this from the Glamour editor for two months though? They are doing their best P.R now to distance themselves from the rogue editor who made the comments as well they should but damage has been done.

That said I thought that this article was a better use of my blogging time. Check it here.

One of the world's most eminent scientists was embroiled in an extraordinary row last night after he claimed that black people were less intelligent than white people and the idea that "equal powers of reason" were shared across racial groups was a delusion.

Sigh! Is it just me or has this year seemed like the year that racial tension and racism have jumped back into the spotlight? Hanging nooses, torture, Jena, lots of questionable comments. Not that things were great but I guess it just seems like blacks have been attacked left right and centre of late. The 60's must be wearing off.

I seriously think that the civil rights movements gains are being eroded and alot of it is because black folk have gotten too complacent and lackadaisical. We've always had to work harder to prove ourselves don't forget that. Now the closet racists are jumping out the woodwork because we're getting sloppy and we haven't built on what we gained. We take alot of stuff for granted. Go talk to your parents or grandparents if you don't believe me. Ask them about some of the shit they dealt with back in the days.

Actually maybe you wont have to ask cause the way things are going we'll be experiencing that stuff again sooner than we think.

Public Service Announcement

gal in a de punny printer! by far!
punny printer - panhead

Memo to all women:

There is an upper size limit to those of you that can successfully wear pum pum shorts and look good. Its just a fact accept it!

Like the white lady Friday, who weighing in at oh lets say somewhere from 195 to 220 on a 5 foot 5 frame got on my bus that morning. She din no young yam either so she should have known better than to be wearing those short, short white tight pum pum shorts and the green even tighter shirt that was barely covering her rather circular, protruding stomach.

Now don't get me wrong I not dissing the lady cause she was big. No not at all. Au contraire, in the right clothing she could have looked decent maybe even quite fetching actually cause she wasn't an ugly woman and there was something rather mesmerizing about watching her run ,with a swiftness belying her girth, across the road with parts jiggling in slow motion trying to hail down the bus driver. Or maybe mesmerizing is the wrong word to use there but I couldn't take my eyes off her cause I was really frighten that something was going to jiggle loose or dem tight pants were going to split as she sprinted and she would have embarrassed herself when the whole outfit buss off by the bus door and expose all her particulars.

And then ya know what? After she had successfully gotten onto the bus without mishap, now moving even closer to my line of sight so I could really see just how ridiculously tight the pants were, in fiddling in her bag for her bus tokens she dropped said tokens and something else from her bag.

Well to paraphrase Paul Keens, who tell she to do that? Next thing I know the woman bending over facing me. And I, the one day I didn't sit near the back of the bus cause I say I had too many bags and getting out before the station and didn't feel like lugging things all the way back there, silently screaming as I seeing what I aint suppose to see cause I don't know her like that, close close up to my face like I have high def, IMAX three-d, objects in the mirror are closer than they appear vision. Lawd ave mercy!

So now she bend over and her bottom staring at we and we can see things print out and colors of things underneath and what not and I there wondering to myself is what kinda space age, super tensile strength material dem shorts mek out of that stopping all dat from popping loose at de seams?

I don't know boy but I hear some loud snickers from the back where sitting were three lil force ripe young gals about 14 or 15 in too much makeup, including one who was juss juss talking two minutes before about how "her ex boy friend really knew how to work it". Lawd ave his mercy talk about jaw drop. cuhdear

But see what I mean? When you wear them sort of things like pum pum shorts as a big woman and I mean that in terms of both size and age and ya don't look decent or at least good , ya duz get laff at by even little pickney.

So as a public service announcement to that lady and others like her please, please, oh please use some discretion in dressing. Everything don't look good on everybody.

Now if you'll pardon me I'm still screaming silently inside wondering if jucking out muh eyeballs wud help, so I going to my therapy session. Oh the horror, the horror!
