Disgraceful!

I was going to swear but I realized that it was Sunday morning so I'd try to be respectful but in my opinion disgraceful or shameful was too tame a word to describe this.

I'm listening to the Underground Railroad show on hiphopmusic.com right now and they are speaking about "the tsunami song" which was being played on Hot97 radio station in New York last week. Big up to Hiphopmusic.com for being the first to draw attention to this in Jay Smooth's blog on Friday.

what's the big deal? Well in case you don't check the link here are some of the lyrics to this tsunami song.

.All at once you could hear the screaming ch*nks and no one was safe from the wave there were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, "swim you b*tches swim"

So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami
you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
and now the children will be sold to child slavery...

See why I don't have the words to describe this. I'm sorry if there as ever a need to curse this is probably it ...but I will try and refrain.

Can you believe someone would actually make a song with lyrics like that. How heartless and callous can we get? And even if you believed that this song could be made would you have believed that someone on radio would actually play it? Un-frigging-believable.

And a radio station in New York of all places? New York which just 3 years ago was the scene of the 9/11 attacks. You would think New Yorkers would have some sympathy for someone else going through a tragedy and wouldn't play something like this right? I mean after all the comments about persons in Arab countries cheering as the towers fell you'd think they would be a bit sensitive to what they did involving another persons tragedy.

One of the things that additionally pisses me off is that Hot97 is one of those mainstream Hip Hop stations that's well known publicly (even though if its like the other mainstream stations it doesn't really represent for the real hip hop) so this is going to play out as ignant black people, ignorant hip-hop artists or listeners with no common sense showing their asses despite the fact that the first persons to actually condemn their actions were other hiphop listeners like the guys over at hiphopmusic.com and that the guys over at okayplayer.com, another hip hop site, took a very active part in condemning the station and compiling lists of its sponsors for persons to complain to. Once again we will be judged as a collective by the action of a few ignorant people! Just wait till more mainstream media outlets get a hold of this.

How can people be so blasted stupid? It boggles my mind.

WHAT?! It played on a hip-hop station because hip-hop artistes sang it? Is that what this means? Hate groups abound in this country where hatred is so organized--for those groups, no low is too low--but I'd find it hard to believe that 'minorities' sang that song.

you underestimate minorities melody. actually up to now i havent seen any mention of who is singing the song. its supposedly a parody so its probably some unknown. Hot 97 issued a half assed apology though

how quick we are to forget. The minds and mentality of americans are very shallow. It's all about the money. remember, half of those same hiphop artist probaby never heard of those parts of asia until the tsunami hit. so it carries no meaning of humanity to them. pitiful...

hol up now camp. you have no justification for generalizing and saying that the hip hop artists probably never heard of those places and it means nothing to them. just because one station and one artist currently unknown are asses we cant use that to paint all hip hop artists.

And what, rapping about women being bitches and hos and killin' niggas and murder and rape and misogyny and homophobia is ok? jdid, please.

those tsunami lyrics--while in poor taste--aren't any different from the crap that constitutes hiphop. DMX, Snoop, Jay-Z, Nelly, Nas, and countless others rap on the regular about robbing shooting and killing one another. why is it suddenly so shocking that someone raps distastefully about tsunami victims?

desensitization. it's just like the crisis in africa... it's only the niggers. they've been in a bad way for years, talking about raping their mamas and killiing their brothers. but OMIGOD they're rapping about tsunami victims. clutch the pearls!

big-ass chupse.

Just to clarify, the song was not recorded by any hip-hop artists.. the hosts of the show recorded it themselves, hence the horrible off-key singing.

Jdid said...

Jay smooth didnt realize it was the hosts, thanks for the clarification.

Marlo you dont have to be shocked but I was shocked.

Dismal! Dr. D.

Campfyah said...

jdid since it was clrified that the hosts of the show actually made the song, then shame on them and it's still a disgrace, that station should be fined.

However, althouh many hiphop artists don't fit into the general sterotype of ignorance amongst the culture, you must admit that many of these 2 album wonders of hiphop do fit quite clearlyi into that definition. just listen to their songs, lyrics and worst off, listen to them trying to speak proper english in an interview. They can't do it.

It really distateful. Hot97 represent themselves not the hip hop heads out there (Wendy anyone?). As for Hip hop artists being ignorant and such that is a shit generalization. What is considered hip hop music by a lot of people is really a just a small part.

Marlo put a sock in it.
